Renting or Buying Fine Table Linens?

From the Appolonia Linen atelier · Paris

We are asked this every week, and since our maison does both, we can answer without a sales pitch. The truthful answer: it depends on what the linen is for — a day, or a lifetime.

Rent when the event is the point

A wedding for one hundred and twenty guests needs perhaps fifteen matching tablecloths and a small mountain of napkins. Renting gives you designer motifs across every table for a fraction of the purchase price, with the unglamorous parts (laundering, pressing, storage) handled by the atelier. Our rental wardrobe is cut in printed fine cotton sateen: a decorative fabric chosen precisely because it drapes generously and holds colour beautifully in photographs. Special fabrics can be arranged on request.

Buy when the linen is the keepsake

Some pieces are not décor; they are future heirlooms. The cloth on the family table every Christmas. Napkins monogrammed with a new married name. For these we sew in fabrics made to be washed a thousand times and passed down: pure linen, linen–cotton and luxe percale. They cost more per piece, soften with every year, and belong in the same drawer as the good silver.

The rule of thumb we give clients

What about bespoke?

Bespoke sits above both: embroidery, monograms, appliqué, custom colorways, cut to your table's exact measurements. It is available on purchased pieces (forever) and, for personalisation such as embroidery, on rental arrangements too. Bridal models are joining our trousseau soon.

Our honest conclusion

Renting is the right answer for a room you will only dress once; we do it proudly and we do it well. But if we are honest about where the joy accumulates, it is in the pieces you keep. A rented cloth comes back to us; a purchased one starts a life — washed, softened, monogrammed, argued over at some far-off family lunch. A beautiful piece bought outlives any rental, and a table built slowly, piece by piece, becomes something you hand down rather than hand back.

Still deciding? Commission a piece to keep, build a rental selection in our collections, or simply write to us — we love this conversation.
